D A N A CT A I CS O O N CB U R G E S S Korean American dancer/choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess is the Founding Director of the Moving Forward: Contemporary Asian American Dance Company. His choreography has been featured by the Smithsonian Institution, the John F. Kennedy Center, Dance Place, La Mama, the United Nations, Lincoln Center out-of-doors, the Harborfront, Toronto and CONAC, Caracas, to list a few. Burgess has received numerous grants and commissions for his choreography including DC Commission of the Arts and Humanities Grants, the NEA New Forms\Andy Warhol Foundation Regional Collaborative Grant, and a Kennedy Center's Young Audiences Commission. Dance critique Alan Kriegsman writes- "Burgess is a charismatic presence in motion, suggesting the evolution of natural forms...combining torque with subtle emotional ques drawn from Asian and American modern dance tactics." He is the 1994 recipient of the prestigious DC Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Excellence in the Arts. He is a Mayoral appointed Commissioner for the Arts and Humanities of the District of Columbia. Burgess has taught dance technique at the Hamburg Ballet, the Kirov Academy, Georgetown University, George Mason University, University of Wisconsin, American University, University of Maryland and the Washington Ballet. He holds a master of fine arts degree from George Washington University.
