Sueraya Shaheen's black and white photograph's of children skirt that fuzzy area where photojournalism and art meet. In her "Small World" exhibit at Govinda Gallery, the subjects — little kids photographed in the war zones of Central America and the post-Chernobyl cancer wards of Belarus — are so compelling that the technical and aesthetic qualities of the pictures seem secondary.

But Shaheen does have a studied sense of composition and a knack for catching people being themselves. Those qualities make her photos more than just documentation. On a road in El Salvador, for example, two little girls stare into the camera, their faces blank, their eyes wary. The little one holds her sisters arm, and they cast a single, two-headed shadow. That touching image is framed by scruffy trees lining the dusty road, which vanishes in the far recesses of the photo.
